Necah Stewart Furman, the author of Dietrich’s forthcoming biography, describes the hallmarks that define this revered American coachbuilder. The article discusses the life and achievements of Raymond H. Dietrich, a renowned American coachbuilder known as the “Automotive Architect of the Classic Era.” Over time, appreciation for Dietrich’s exceptional design talents has grown significantly on both national and international levels. His ability to create “art on wheels” with elegant simplicity has led to a surge in the value of his classic car designs, which now command prices in the millions. Dietrich’s success as a designer was marked by his partnership in establishing LeBaron Carrossiers, where he and his colleague Tom Hibbard aimed to become “architects for the automotive industry.” His design philosophy involved drawing inspiration from nature, particularly the Nautilus shell, and focusing on both form and function.

We also celebrate some fine groundbreaking cars of the post-War era, but our interests always hearken back to a time when automobiles were hand-made and hand-built by fine craftsman.
