Derek Hill and Steve Dawson welcomed guests to Petersen Automotive Museum on the evening of May 9, 2018 for an exclusive book signing event and launch of a much anticipated tome. Inside Track: Phil Hill – Ferrari’s American World Champion. His Story, His Photography contains an extensive personal collection of motorsports photography taken by auto racing legend Phil Hill. The book is comprehensive and personal, with captions culled from interviews with Phil Hill, who passed away in 2008 while the project was in progress.
During Wednesday’s night event Derek and Steve presented select images from the book, taking us back to the days when Phil originally took the photos in the ’50s to early ’60s. Phil carried a 35mm Leica camera and shot mostly with Kodachrome film, creating a unique photographic record of his races, travels and friendships – in full color, which was unusual for the day.
The book has been Derek’s personal project for years as custodian of his father’s legacy. With editors Doug Nye and Steve Dawson he meticulously presents Phil’s photographs – scanned from the original prints – telling the behind-the-scenes story of this greatly admired racing icon. Along the way it allows readers a glimpse of the interesting man behind the mystique.
There are different versions available for purchase: a one or two volume set, almost 500 pages and 1,000 pages respectively; and a 3-volume set that includes an autobiography.
